A federal skilled worker is a person who has a certain degree of education, work
experience, and knowledge of at least one of Canada’s official languages (English
or French). A skilled worker is assessed against a points system. Points are awarded for the above factors, as well as for age, authorized employment
experience in Canada, authorized post-secondary studies in Canada, spouse or common-law
partner’s education, having a spouse or common-law partner or blood relative (not
a cousin) who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Applicants
for this visa category must have sufficient funds to support themselves and their
family members for at least six months after arriving in Canada.

Federal Skilled Worker Immigration
To qualify for this program of immigration, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Have at least one year of continuous full-time, paid work experience or the equivalent
in part-time continuous employment within the past 10 years;
- Work experience must be on the Canadian
National Occupational Classification (NOC)
listed as Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional
occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades);
- Score at least 67 points on the self-assessment test in order to apply. The test

Federal Skilled Worker Application Process
There are two application processes for applicants wishing to immigrate under this
visa category:
- The simplified application process
- The regular application process.
Applicants who qualify for the simplified application process will have to submit
one form and payment. They will be contacted by the visa office that will assess
their case when it will be ready to receive supporting documentation.
Applicants who qualify for the regular process are as follows:
- Persons who have been lawfully admitted to Canada for at least one year are submitting
their application at the Canadian visa office in Buffalo;
- Persons who have been lawfully admitted into the United States for at least one
year and are submitting their application at the Canadian visa office in Buffalo;
- Persons applying are a provincial nominee;
- The person has been selected by the Quebec skilled worker program.
Persons using the regular process will have to submit a complete skilled worker
application. This means that all forms, supporting documents, fees, photographs,
etc. of all applicants must be included.
All other applicants must use the simplified application process.
