Canada's immigration program…

Canada´s immigration program is based on the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.  The Act sets forth the objectives and guidelines established by the Canadian government regarding immigration. The Regulations explain how to execute the Act.

The immigration program has three main components:

  • Social (family reunification):
    • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada has the right to sponsor certain members of his family by submitting an undertaking to Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

  • Human (awareness of the situation of refugees):
    • Some persons cannot live in their country of origin because of a well founded fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality, membership in a certain social group or political opinion.

  • Economic (immigrants who contribute to the country´s economic growth and development)
    • Skilled workers bring their skills, qualifications, and experience.
    • Business immigrants invest in a government fund; own and manage a business; or become self-employed in Canada.

The Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations are applied throughout the world using the same criteria.
