Job Opportunities

·Service Canada Centres: Counselors at these centres can tell newcomers information about language training, jobs, and work creation programs, and give you free suggestions. They can help you plan a practical job hunting program and prepare a curriculum vitae for you. Each centre also has listings of job vacancies on bulletin boards or on a computer.

·Classified advertisements: A classified advertisements section, where you can find varied job vacancies, is in each daily newspaper in Canada. Ads for jobs are also in weekly or monthly employment papers in many regions. You can read those advertisements to find out suitable job opportunities for yourself.

·Local help: Immigrant-serving organizations have different types of programs that can help newcomers prepare to go into the Canadian labor force or to obtain access to their profession or trade in Canada. Some give lectures on job-hunting skills and people can get an overview of the labor market where they live. For example, immigrants are instructed on how to write a good résumé and how to answer questions in an interview. In some places, there are mentoring programs, job-searching clubs, and wage subsidy projects.

·Your personal “network”: Interpersonal relations are crucial to everyone, especially in one’s career. Speaking to other people is one of the most effective ways to learn about jobs. You can talk to your intimate friends or people you’ve just met for the first time. Although they cannot offer you a job directly, they can supply you with information, thoughts, and names of others who might be capable of encouraging and assisting you.

·The Internet: It is said that you can look for whatever you’re interested in on the Internet. Many Web sites have information on job opportunities. You can hunt for a job and send your résumé (in English or French) on-line to any place in Canada. After you’ve posted your résumé, it goes into a database that can be accessed by employers. Moreover, some sites will offer suggestions on planning your job hunting. On the whole, you can benefit a lot from the Internet.
