Language Assistance
LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada)
LINC is a federal government scheme for all qualified adult immigrants. It offers:
- free language training for adult immigrants who need basic English or French;
- language classes given by universities and local organizations;
- the choice of studying part-time, full-time, evenings or weekends;
ISAP (Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program)
ISAP helps newcomers obtain access to community services to satisfy their urgent demands.
Under ISAP, immigrant-serving organizations can:
- provide you with social, economic, health, educational and recreational services;
- give you tips on shopping, banking, transportation and other everyday tasks;
- provide interpreters or translators, if needed;
- assist you in preparing a professional-looking résumé and learn necessary skills.
ELT (Enhanced Language Training)
ELT aims at delivering higher levels of language training and specialist language training, including labour market experience all over Canada. As a part of ISAP, ELT is expected to provide the following:
- Higher levels of language training, Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or the Standards Linguistics Canadians (SLC) levels 7-10 (English or French) will be delivered to help meet the needs of immigrants who need higher levels of language abilities to enter or remain in the labour market;
- Higher levels (CLB/SLC 7-10) of job-specific language training will be delivered to enable immigrants to find and retain jobs;
- For the promotion of regionalization, CLB/SLC levels 1-10 (English or French) will be delivered in smaller centres without language training infrastructure (ELT is not intended to duplicate or substitute for LINC);
- All of the above must include a bridge to work component, such as mentoring, cultural orientation to the workplace, preparation for licensure exams and internships for eligible clients.
