Family Class Sponsorship
Dependent Child

This page is designed to guide you in sponsoring your dependent child.


General Information

According to Canadian Immigration law, a dependent son or daughter is a biological or adopted child who:

  1. Is less than 22 years of age and has not been married or been in a common-law relationship
  2. Is over the age of 22, has never been married or in a common-law relationship AND is a full-time student at a post-secondary institution since before turning 22 and is financially dependent on his/her parents since before the age of 22
  3. Is over the age of 22, is married or in a common-law relationship AND has been a full-time student since before turning 22 or becoming a spouse or common-law partner AND has been financially dependent on his/her parents since turning 22 or since becoming a spouse or common-law partner
  4. Is more than 22 years of age and financially supported by a parent since before age 22 and is unable to support himself or herself due to a mental or physical condition.


Eligibility

To be eligible for sponsoring your dependent child, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. You are at least 18 years of age and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, living in Canada
  2. You are not receiving social assistance
  3. You are not in default of any previous sponsorship
  4. You are not bankrupt
  5. You are not in prison


Application Process

Along with the Sponsorship application and the Application for Permanent residence, the following supporting documents are required for sponsoring your dependent child:

Basic Document Checklist
Sponsor in Canada Sponsored citizen
Government issued ID Birth Certificate
Employment records Photocopy of valid passport
Tax documents Police certificates from all countries of residence in the past 10 years (if 18 or older)
Proof of relationship to sponsoring your dependent child Medical clearance


Processing Timelines:

Decisions on sponsorship applications for sponsoring your dependent child can take from 6 to 25+ months. Completing the application accurately can speed up the process. The following are the main reasons for delays and refusals in applications:

  • You did not prove that the relationship between you and your dependent child is genuine in the case of sponsoring your dependent child
  • The dependent child has an illness that is contagious and could pose a threat to the health of the public of Canada
  • Forms are not completed properly or forms are not signed
  • There are missing supporting documents in your application for sponsoring your dependent child

 Average time to complete application by Immigroup: 2-4 weeks

Immigroup representation CDN $1500 + 5% GST
Government:
Sponsorship and permanent residence application fee CDN $75 (fees may change depending on marital status of dependent)
Right of permanent residence fee CDN $490
TOTAL CDN $ 2140 *
* Additional fees apply if translation and courier is required.
