Parents and Grandparents

General Information

Parents and grandparents can be sponsored by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who lives in Canada and is at least 18 years of age.  The relationship between the sponsor and the sponsored person must be proven through documents issued by civil authorities.

Documents that prove relationship of the sponsor to a parent:

• Sponsor's birth certificate showing the parents’ names

Documents that prove relationship of the sponsor to a grandparent:

• Sponsor's birth certificate showing the parents’ names
• Sponsor's parent's birth certificate through whom the sponsor is related to the sponsored grandparent

Eligibility

To be eligible to sponsor your parent and grandparent to Canada, you must meet the following requirements:

1. You are at least 18 years of age and a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, living in Canada
2. You are not on any social assistance program
3. You are not in default of any previous sponsorship
4. You are not bankrupt
5. You are not in prison
6. You meet the financial requirements

Application Process

Along with the Sponsorship application and the Application for Permanent residence, the following supporting documents are required for sponsoring your parents and grandparents:

Processing Timelines:

Decisions on sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents can take at least 24 months.

 Average time to complete application by Immigroup: 2-4 weeks

Fees Fees are paid in installments; last payment is due before the Sponsorship Application is submitted to CIC. If you need more time to make payments, please speak with our accounting department.
