MARRIAGE IN JAPAN

If you wish to marry a Japanese citizen in Japan, these are the documents you must submit to Japanese authorities in order to get married in Japan. Immigroup can guide you through this process by helping you obtain, prepare, and submit all the documentation required by the Japanese government. Our fees start at $400 + disbursement fees.

Each city in Japan has its own requirements for marriage. However, the following is a list of recommendable documents you should have with you when you travel to Japan.

  1. Your passport
  2. Proof of eligibility to marry. This can be in the form of an affidavit of single status.
  3. Birth Certificate

Your partner in Japan should consult with the city or ward office as to which documents you will need. The affidavit of single status and your birth certificate will have to be translated into Japanese. It is advisable that Japanese authorities in Canada legalize these documents.

How Immigroup can help:

Immigroup can help you obtain required identity documents before you travel to Japan: Long Form Birth Certificate, Divorce or Marriage Certificate, Statutory Declaration, Affidavit, Canadian Citizenship Card, Permanent Resident Card, Passport, and Visitor Visa Application to Canada.

The following information is provided by the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan.

Marriage in Japan

The solemnization of a marriage in Japan occurs through its registration which is carried out at ward or city offices throughout Japan. Canadians planning to marry in Japan should contact the ward or city office in their area of residence (or area of residence of their fiancé) for detailed information.

As part of the marriage registration process the ward or city office will require you to submit proof that you are legally free to marry. This proof is accepted in the form an affidavit that you must swear in front of an officer at a Canadian Embassy or Consulate in Japan (Fukuoka, Nagoya, or Osaka).

You are therefore requested to call ahead for an appointment. The cost is $50. This can be paid in yen but as yen cost will change from time to time due to exchange rate fluctuations, it is not posted on this site.

Once your marriage is registered, you should ensure that you keep a copy of the "marriage certificate" that you are issued as this becomes your proof of marriage. While you can contact your normal province of territory of residence in Canada (see Vital Statistics section of this site for contact information) to see if they will register your marriage and issue you a certificate, you should be aware that most of these offices will only register marriages which are solemnized within their jurisdiction.
