spousal sponsorship while on social assistance
« on: March 31, 2016, 12:12:04 PM »
I am currently on social assistance (the government is helping with school and means of living while trying to put my life back together after the divorce).  My boyfriend is a Tunisian citizen and we plan to get married soon.  Would I be able to sponsor him on a fiancee visa? If no, how would my financial difficulties would interfere with sponsoring him after we are married?  Could I sponsor him if I am still receiving government assistance?

Thank you.

Hi there,
Depending on the type of social assistance, social assistance makes you ineligible, whether or not you are married. So, as long as you are on social assistance you cannot sponsor.

Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks Riley.  Is there a fiancee visa for Canada?  or that is just in the US?  would you know?

Just the US. In Canada, you have to sponsor your spouse for permanent residence.
