Marriage to an Emirian Citizen

Every country has its own laws that apply to its citizens marrying a person from a different country. Getting married to a Emirian citizen with the goal of eventually bringing them to Canada to live is a process with many steps.

If you want to bring your Emirian spouse or partner to live in Canada, you must then file a sponsorship application for them to become a permanent resident. If they would like to visit you in Canada while their application is in process, they must also apply for a visitor visa. For more information, please see our family sponsorship page and our visitor visa page.

Emirian Marriage Basic Requirements

It is possible to get married in the United Arab Emirates at churches and under Sharia law in the courts.  There are no civil ceremonies performed in the UAE.  See the links below for specific information on getting married in Abu Dhabi or Dubai and the Northern Emirates.  The Embassies conduct marriages in only very rare circumstances.

Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)

If you are getting married in a church in Dubai or the Northern Emirates you will need to provide a Certificate of No-Impediment.  If you are getting married in a church in Abu Dhabi you will need to provide a declaration that you are free and single to marry.  The Embassy can help you with this.

For the CNI you must come to the Embassy in Dubai to post your bans.  You will need to give notice that you intend to marry. You will need to bring with you:

  • Both applicants’ passports with UAE visas or entry stamps (at least one applicant must have been in the UAE for 21 days)
  • Proof of your physical, residential address (eg Utility bill, tenancy contract.  If these are in your company’s name please bring a letter from your company to say where you reside.
  • Original Canadian divorce documents (if divorced in another country, further documentation may be required: staff will advise at the time of application)

You will swear an oath to the effect that there is no impediment to your marriage. The notice is displayed in the Consulate for 21 days and if no legal impediment to the marriage has been shown to exist, the certificate is issued.

In Abu Dhabi, to make the declaration that you are free and single to marry you must come to the Embassy between 8am and 11am and swear the declaration in front of an officer.  The required declaration will be given to you on that day.

Family Members

If your Emirian spouse has dependent children, this does not affect the Emirian Marriage document application.

If you have dependent children, they have no effect on the application to marry an Emirian citizen.
