PRTD multiple entry, only valid 6 months?

I am a Canadian citizen married to a German, living in Germany. We are both deemed non-residents, but he has a PR card which expired a week ago. If there were a death in my family, he could not enter Canada now. Correct? If we apply now for the PRTD, and something were to happen in 7 months or later, I have to just keep applying for this PRTD over and over until we get back to Canada to apply for a new PR card?

No, he cannot enter Canada without a valid PR card. You can apply for a multiple PRTD- which is usually valid for a year
