As of August 12, 2013 there are new rules and requirements for all British passport applications submitted from Canada. Below are some of the changes you can expect.

1. Where to send your UK passport application

Previously British passport applications were submitted to the regional passport processing centre in Washington DC, USA. Before that they were processed at the British High Commission in Ottawa, ON, Canada. Now, all passport applications are sent to the UK for processing. From Canada, send your UK passport applications via courier such as Purolator or FedEx to

Her Majesty’s Passport Office
OVS-D
Millburngate House
Millburngate
Durham, United Kingdom
DH97 1PA

2. UK Passport application forms

Before, adult passport applicants used form C1 and minors age 15 and under used form C2 as pictured below. These forms are no longer accepted. Under the new rules, all applicants must complete the OS form (which stands for Overseas).

3. British passport application fees

There is also a new form should you wish to pay the passport application fee via credit card. This form is available here.

4. Supporting documents for your UK passport application

If applicants have a valid passport issued from another country (such as Canada), they are now expected to include this original passport with their application for a British passport, regardless of whether it is a renewal or first time application. Previously this was only done for applicants submitting an application to the UK Border Agency for Registration as a British Citizen. You may find the complete list of supporting documents for British passports here.

5. What country are you applying from?

If you are applying from a country other than the one you were born in, you must now explain this to the British passport authorities in a letter enclosed with your application. For example, if you were born in the UK and have since immigrated to Canada, or if you were born in Australia and are in Canada on a work permit, you must advise of these circumstances in writing.

To do this, just write a letter with the explanation, sign it, and include it with the application.

6. British passport application processing time

When applications were processed in Washington DC, the average processing time was around 4 weeks, and frequently as quick as 2 weeks. With the applications now being processed in the UK, we expect processing time to increase. Currently Immigroup’s first applications sent to the UK have been in process for 5 weeks and are not yet complete. We will update this section with processing time information as it becomes available.
